Sustainable Fashion

A partnership for responsible fashion

The first Remode Design project brought together successful designers/ brands from Finland, Nigeria and Senegal to learn from each other with a focus on sustainability and a win-win-win approach.

TAUKO is a sustainable nordic fashion house founded in 2014 and based in Helsinki, Finland. The founders Mila and Kaisa are committed to creating timeless and ethical clothing for people who care about planetary well-being. Their passion for new ideas and innovations is turned into experimental designs which complement and develop the Lifecycles collection. With its award-winning production concept that creates a new life cycle for locally sourced industrial textiles, used during their first life cycle as bedsheets for hotels and healthcare, Tauko is able to rescue the quality textiles from being burned in massive amounts.

Adama N’Diaye is the owner of the AdamaParis brand, the founder and the producer of many fashion events such as Dakar Fashion Week, the African Fashion Awards and the Black Fashion Week Prague, Bahia, Paris and Montreal. Adama and her team also launched “Fashion Africa TV”: the first 100% African fashion television channel in April 2014. In 2019, Adama Paris opened the SAARGALE CONCEPT STORE in the hearts of Paris, Casablanca and Dakar, to promote and sell Made in Africa & Made by African artisans and designers. Adama has developed, nurtured and mentored hundreds in the fashion and design industry with her scholarship and internship programs in France and some other African countries.

ThisIsUs An inspiring team and company focused on finding the very best local materials in Nigeria and showing how quality, functionality and #design are meshed together in vibrant shapes and forms. The founders Oromo and Osione articulate this best in their quote ‘‘ We create value. We believe in the work of our hands. We use local resources to serve local communities. We imagine experiences and design possibilities. We work together. We celebrate what we have and create what we don't have. We are proud of our products. We are proud of our people. We are proud of our nation.” Their focus on locally grown, processed and naturally dyed cotton, using locally run textile mills and dye pits, makes their offering distinctive and well sort after.

These companies were matched based on their achievements, focus on sustainability, impact, shared values, local production emphasis, and complementarity in aesthetics. Their Remode journey was unique, and the on-boarding work helped these creatives openly discuss and share ideas, learning from each other and using some of the differences to create something extraordinary. The original plan was a co-created collection with a physical meet in Lagos and a showing during Dakar Fashion Week. However, a new opportunity for Tauko in the make-your-own fashion world, meant a pivot and collaboration in the newly launched Tauko Magazine, a pioneering independent print publication for home sewists around the world, with both AdamaParis and Thisisus featured.

In this project, the ability to quickly adjust to a new situation was important. The pivot required buy-in from the other partners and Remode’s presence especially in making sure the communication lines were open and underlying meanings were understood, were key in making this a success and leaving room for future work and collaborations.
